glossary


Dietetic- These are sounds thats occur naturally within the scene, such as radio in the background.

Non-Dietetic- These are sound in which come from sound outside the story sound e.g. narrators commentary, sound affects that are added for the dramatic effect, or mood music.

Ambient- Sound thats around the location, e.g birds, trees, wind, traffic, office noises.

SFX- This means sound effects.

Mood- Music that sets the mood of the scene.

Tone- Tone is the key that the music is shown as and gives body to the sounds.

Genre- This is the category that the music is put into.

Theme music- An often repeated song in a musical play that is identified with the work or one of its characters.

Musical score- Written form of a musical composition; parts for different instruments appear on separate staves on large page.

Synchronous sound- Sound that appears to be matched to certain movements occurring in the scene, as when footsteps correspond to feet walking.

Asynchronous sound- Sound which is indigenous to the action but not precisely synchronized with the action. 

Contrapuntal- This means its characterized by counterpoint. 

Silence- This is where there is no noise at all or the sound drops dramatically.

Selective sound- this is where in post-production they intensify the sound, for instance and bang. 

Sound bridges- this is where the sound carrys on from the last scene
